Fish to Avoid with Guppies

Some fish are poor guppy companions because of aggression, predation, fin nipping, size, or incompatible water needs. Avoiding a risky match is easier than trying to fix constant stress later.

Predation risk

Large cichlids and predatory fish

Fish large enough to swallow a guppy may eventually do so, even if the first days appear peaceful.

Fin damage risk

Known fin nippers

Long guppy tails can invite repeated nipping. Barbs and other energetic nippers may keep guppies under constant pressure.

Temperament risk

Aggressive or territorial species

Fish that defend caves or territories can injure guppies that do not understand those boundaries.

Environmental mismatch

Cool-water specialists

A fish may be peaceful but still unsuitable when it needs a meaningfully different temperature or flow level.

What to do if a match fails

  1. Separate injured or exhausted fish immediately.
  2. Test water because poor conditions can intensify aggression.
  3. Add line-of-sight breaks only as a temporary measure.
  4. Rehome or permanently separate incompatible species.
