Guppies with Shrimp and Snails

Guppies often coexist with adult snails and some adult shrimp, but tiny shrimp and newborns may be viewed as food. Success depends on species, cover, and your expectations.

Snails: usually a practical match

Nerite and other suitable aquarium snails generally keep to themselves. They add little social conflict, though they still contribute waste and need stable water.

Shrimp: possible with tradeoffs

Adult shrimp may do well in a planted tank, but shrimplets are vulnerable. Guppies are curious, fast feeders and may pick at small invertebrates.

Increase the odds of success

  • Use moss, fine plants, wood, and rock gaps as shrimp refuge.
  • Add established adult shrimp rather than very small juveniles.
  • Feed guppies well without overfeeding the aquarium.
  • Avoid medications containing ingredients unsafe for invertebrates.
  • Keep realistic expectations about baby shrimp survival.

Watch feeding competition

Guppies rush food quickly. Use sinking or targeted foods for bottom-dwelling invertebrates and confirm that snails and shrimp are actually eating rather than relying only on leftovers.
