Guppy Birth Timeline

A guppy pregnancy usually unfolds over several weeks, but individual timing varies. This timeline helps you prepare without repeatedly moving or stressing the female.

Early stage

Subtle growth

The abdomen begins to enlarge. Continue normal care, balanced feeding, and stable water rather than making sudden changes.

Middle stage

Clear pregnancy shape

The belly and gravid area become more noticeable. Add dense plants or other fry cover if you plan to leave the female in the main aquarium.

Late stage

Preparing for birth

The rear of the abdomen may look more squared, and behavior may change. Keep the environment calm and avoid constant netting.

Birth

Live fry arrive

Fry are born individually and usually begin swimming quickly. Adults may eat them, so cover or separation affects survival.

First 24 hours

Stability over interference

Confirm gentle filtration, safe temperature, and access to appropriately tiny food. Remove dangerous debris without over-cleaning.
