How to Raise Guppy Fry
Newborn guppy fry are miniature swimmers with immediate needs: clean warm water, gentle filtration, tiny nutritious meals, and protection from larger fish.
Stable, clean, and gently moving
Tiny portions several times when practical
Dense plants or a separate nursery
Regular observation and sensible thinning
Choose a fry-care method
Planted main tank
Simple and natural, but survival is lower because adults may eat fry. Dense floating and fine-leaved plants improve cover.
Separate nursery tank
Provides control over feeding and safety, but it must be cycled, heated, and maintained like any other aquarium.
Temporary breeder box
Useful for short periods, but limited water flow and crowding can become problems as fry grow.
Feeding tiny fish
Use finely crushed quality food, fry powder, or appropriately sized live foods. Small frequent meals can support growth, but extra feeding also creates extra waste. Keep portions tiny and siphon debris carefully.
Growth checkpoints
- Fry are active and able to reach food.
- Bellies appear gently rounded after feeding, not constantly bloated.
- Water remains clear with zero ammonia and nitrite.
- Larger fry are not preventing smaller ones from feeding.
- The nursery is not becoming crowded as the group grows.
