Signs a Guppy Is Pregnant
Female guppies are livebearers, and pregnancy can be easy to suspect but harder to time. Look for several changes together rather than relying on one dark spot.
Body shape changes
The abdomen grows steadily and may appear more squared toward the rear as birth approaches. A suddenly swollen fish, especially with raised scales or poor behavior, should not automatically be assumed pregnant.
The gravid area
A darker area near the rear of the abdomen may become more obvious. Its appearance varies with the female's color, age, lighting, and stage.
Behavior changes
Some females seek plant cover, rest more, become less social, or show reduced appetite shortly before delivery. Others continue behaving normally.
Pregnancy is not an exact countdown
Temperature, age, health, stress, and individual variation affect timing. Use a range and watch the fish instead of trying to predict a precise hour.
Pregnancy versus a health problem
| More consistent with pregnancy | More concerning for illness |
|---|---|
| Gradual, symmetrical abdominal growth | Sudden swelling or one-sided lump |
| Normal scales and mostly normal swimming | Raised scales, severe lethargy, or loss of balance |
| Changes occurring in a mature female | Rapid decline, sores, or persistent white waste |
