Guppy Tank Setup Checklist

A successful guppy tank begins before the fish come home. Use this checklist to avoid rushed purchases and give the aquarium time to become biologically stable.

Equipment checklist

Setup sequence

  1. Choose the location. Keep the tank level, supported, away from direct sun, and near safe electrical access.
  2. Rinse and arrange. Rinse substrate and décor with water only. Create hiding areas while preserving open swimming room.
  3. Fill and condition. Add water conditioner for chlorine or chloramine and start the heater and filter.
  4. Cycle the aquarium. Establish beneficial bacteria before normal stocking. Test until ammonia and nitrite are consistently handled.
  5. Add guppies gradually. Acclimate calmly and avoid adding the maximum number all at once.

Final 24-hour check

Confirm stable temperature, steady filter flow, no leaks, clear water, and safe decorations. Test the water and make sure every piece of equipment is operating before adding livestock.
