Guppy Tank Setup Checklist
A successful guppy tank begins before the fish come home. Use this checklist to avoid rushed purchases and give the aquarium time to become biologically stable.
Equipment checklist
Setup sequence
- Choose the location. Keep the tank level, supported, away from direct sun, and near safe electrical access.
- Rinse and arrange. Rinse substrate and décor with water only. Create hiding areas while preserving open swimming room.
- Fill and condition. Add water conditioner for chlorine or chloramine and start the heater and filter.
- Cycle the aquarium. Establish beneficial bacteria before normal stocking. Test until ammonia and nitrite are consistently handled.
- Add guppies gradually. Acclimate calmly and avoid adding the maximum number all at once.
Final 24-hour check
Confirm stable temperature, steady filter flow, no leaks, clear water, and safe decorations. Test the water and make sure every piece of equipment is operating before adding livestock.
