Guppy Care Basics
Good guppy care is less about chasing perfect numbers and more about keeping the aquarium stable. A cycled tank, consistent temperature, sensible feeding, and regular observation create the foundation.
The five things guppies need every day
Clean, oxygenated water
Use a filter sized for the aquarium and keep the surface gently moving. The goal is steady biological filtration without turning the tank into a strong current.
Stable warmth
Most guppies thrive in warm tropical water. A reliable heater is valuable because sudden swings can weaken fish even when the average temperature seems acceptable.
Room to swim
Guppies are active and social. Avoid cramped bowls and leave open swimming space alongside plants and cover.
Balanced food
Offer small portions and rotate flakes, micro pellets, and occasional frozen or live foods. Remove uneaten food before it decays.
A simple weekly care rhythm
Check behavior, appetite, temperature, and equipment. Look for clamped fins, rapid breathing, hiding, or a fish separating from the group.
Test water as needed, remove debris, clean the viewing glass, and replace a portion of the water with conditioned water at a similar temperature.
Inspect the filter, heater, cords, and plant growth. Rinse reusable filter media in removed tank water rather than untreated tap water.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Adding fish before the aquarium is cycled
- Feeding every time the fish beg at the glass
- Replacing all filter media at once
- Overcrowding because the fish are small
- Ignoring how quickly mixed-sex groups reproduce
