Guppy Tail Types
Tail shape is one of the easiest ways to describe a fancy guppy. Names can vary among breeders, but the broad forms below help you recognize the look you prefer.
Delta tail
A broad triangular tail with a dramatic spread. It is one of the most recognizable fancy guppy silhouettes.
Fan tail
Wide and rounded like an open fan, often creating a flowing appearance while the fish swims.
Swordtail forms
One or both tail edges extend into narrow points. Double sword, top sword, and bottom sword describe the direction.
Round tail
A compact rounded form that can appear balanced and athletic rather than oversized.
Lyretail
Upper and lower extensions create a lyre-like outline with an open center.
Large tails require thoughtful care
Very elaborate fins can make swimming harder in strong current and are more vulnerable to nipping or damage. Match filtration and tank mates to the fish's body shape.
Choose health before perfection
Look for smooth swimming, open fins, a straight body, alert behavior, and good appetite. A striking tail is not worth choosing if the fish is weak or struggling to swim.
